The compact luxury SUV segment in India has grown by leaps and bounds. This particular segment has seen a phenomenal increase in market share with the likes of Audi Q3 and BMW X1 leading the way. With its rivals already in the segment and tasting success, we knew it wouldn’t be long before Mercedes too takes the plunge. Now, news from the manufacturer’s website states that it will be filling this vacuum with the GLA compact SUV.
The GLA will be launched in the market on September 30. The car offered though will not be a four wheel drive but a front wheel drive, based on the MFA platform also shared by the A and B-Class compact hatchbacks.
Both petrol and diesel engines will be offered in India. The petrol unit is likely a 1.6litre, turbo unit producing close to 152bhp and 250Nm of turning force. The oil burner will be a 2.2litre mill capable of 133bhp and a respectable 300Nm of torque. Both engines will have the same choice of 7-speed automatic transmission.
Don’t expect the GLA to come cheap though. We expect it to make your wallet lighter by more than 30 lakh rupees (ex-showroom). This will largely be due to it taking the CBU route to our shores, thus incurring heavy duties and taxes on the way.
