Mahindra S101 spotted testing, again.

Mahindra and Mahindra have been particularly successful in their SUV offerings in the country. Now with Ford’s EcoSport setting the stage ablaze in the sub-4m SUV segment, the company is eager to bite in to that market share as well. The car codenamed S101 has been spotted testing many times before.

The mule spotted wears heavy camouflage and one cannot decipher much by looking at these pictures.

This time however it has been snapped in Leh; what I can presume is that the SUV is undergoing cold weather / high altitude testing. The S101 is based on the dimensions of a compact hatchback but the true appeal of an SUV is the commanding view that it offers to the driver. Mahindra is well aware of this and plans on giving its customers exactly that. The car will get all the usual add-ons to make it look the part like – high ground clearance, nudge guards etc. A monocoque chassis will be used for this baby SUV, giving it strength and rigidity.

Nothing is concrete at this point but we believe that the crossover will be powered by Mahindra’s newly developed three-pot engines. The petrol will probably be a 1.2litre and the oil burner will likely be the 1.5litre mill seen in the Quanto. The high-end variant will be adorned with features such as alloy wheels, ABS, dual airbags, multi-function steering wheel and an infotainment system.

The compact SUV is expected sometime next year and by then it will have to contend with upcoming compact SUVs from the stables of Hyundai, Maruti and Tata.
