Renault is on a roll in India, especially after the runaway success of its Duster compact SUV. The French car maker is not getting complacent and is reportedly working on an MPV. The new car has made several appearances on the web through spy pictures. The “Lodgy” as it is called; is Renault’s answer to the Honda Mobilio, Chevrolet Enjoy, Maruti Ertiga as well as Toyota’s Innova. The exact launch date is unknown although it has been confirmed by the manufacturer that it will be in 2015.
In the latest spy shots, coming in from Chennai, the car is seen wearing heavy camouflage. The MPV overall has big dimensions and a boxy but slightly rounded-off shape. Parking sensors can be seen at the rear. Renault has been tight lipped about this car, but we do know that the Lodgy is based on the Duster platform and will be sharing several parts with it.
This component sharing will definitely lead to the MPV being competitively priced in the cost-sensitive Indian market. The interiors are expected to feature quality materials and good equipment levels. An infotainment system along with rear ac vents will likely be present in the car.
Propelling this MPV will be the engine currently seen in the Duster SUV. That means the unit will be a 1500cc, 4-cylinder, K9K oil-burner capable of 84bhp and 200Nm of torque, paired in all likelihood to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The Lodgy will be manufactured at Renault-Nissan’s Oragadam manufacturing facility at Chennai. Since this car was spotted in Chennai something tells me that the MPV will mostly enter the markets early next year.
