Skoda has launched an update to its best-selling Rapid sedan. The new car has been priced at Rs-7.22 lakh for the base variant with the cost of owning one going up all the way to Rs-10.97 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) for the top of the line Elegance trim optioned with the Black package. The sedan is available in four forms – Active, Ambition, Ambition + and Elegance. A Black package can be specified with the Elegance trim.
The exterior gets a minor revisal but with the Black package you can get black – alloy wheels, fog lamps, logo, side mirrors, projector headlamp cluster and grille. This package however is available only with Candy White and Brilliant Silver colour schemes, but can be accommodated with other colours on special request. Further add-ons which are not standard for the Black package include black side foils and black roof.
The highlight of this new model is that, which cannot be seen on the outside. The lineup now boasts of a diesel automatic variant. The engine options are of a 1.6litre petrol and 1.5litre TDI engines producing the same 103bhp of max power but naturally differing on their torque outputs. Diesel makes 250Nm while the petrol has 153Nm of twisting force. The manual versions of both engines transfer power to the front wheels through the 5-speed manual cog unit. However, the automatic version of the petrol gets a 6-speed Tiptronic gearbox and the automatic diesel receives the acclaimed 7-speed DSG autobox.
Features such as cruise control, rear parking sensors, ABS and dual front-airbags make this a reasonable package. Skoda has launched the new Rapid at a time when the Indian consumer is looking for money to spend on a good product. With the introduction of the Rapid diesel with DSG, the manufacturer has definitely given car buyers a solid reason to give the new Rapid a second look.
