The GLA is a good looking SUV and is based on the MFA architecture that is beneath the A-Class hatchback. The front-end features the signature two-slat radiator grille which has become the norm among the German manufacturer’s recent products. The front and rear bumper gets Matt Silver finish. The headlights are xenon units with LED DRLs. The hood gets two parallel power lines which along with the muscular looking wheel arches convey the masculine appeal of the vehicle. The 18-inch, 5-spoke alloy wheels and the twin rectangular exhaust pipes add to the sporty look.

The inside also echoes that of the A-Class which means it looks modern, uncluttered and sophisticated. Features such as panoramic sunroof, satellite navigation, rear-view camera, Harman Kardon audio system with twelve speakers and safety gizmos like Anti-Skid Regulation (ASR), Brake Assist Systems (BAS) and Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) come as standard.

Diesel and petrol engines are both offered for the GLA. The petrol unit is a 2.0litre, four-cylinder engine pumping out 181bhp and 300Nm of torque. The diesel mill is a 2.2litre, four-cylinder block capable of 135bhp and the same 300Nm of torque. Both variants are turbocharged and will get the power supplied to the front wheels through a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. You read that right. This SUV does not come with Mercs 4Matic all-wheel drive system, the upcoming and more powerful GLA45 AMG will be having that option.

Mercedes-Benz has entered the compact SUV market a little later than its rivals. Audi has the Q3 and BMW has the X1 and these cars are doing quite well in the popular SUV category. Mercedes has claimed that the GLA has secured more than 600 bookings since German major started taking orders. This shows that this mini-SUV does have what it takes to succeed in this highly competitive segment.
