Hyundai showcases two new engines and transmission at Paris Motor Show

In keeping with the growing trend of downsizing engines and lowering carbon emissions, Hyundai Motors have revealed two new petrol turbocharged engines and a 7-speed dual clutch transmission at the ongoing Paris Motor Show. The engines will be three and four cylinder mills having displacement of 1.0 and 1.4litre respectively, belonging to the new generation of the Kappa lineup.

The 1.0litre T-GDI unit features direct-petrol injection and a single scroll turbocharger. Hyundai says better throttle response and low-end torque has been achieved by an electronically-controlled waste-gate. A six-hole GDI injector spraying fuel at 300bar facilitates cleaner combustion and further improves fuel-efficiency. All that pressure and forced induction tends to heat up the engine quickly. To counter this, a new split cooling system has been installed which handles the head and block areas of the engine and accordingly maintains temperature to optimize injection and cooling. To keep the engine compact the exhaust manifold is now integrated in the cylinder head. The company claims power figures of 118.3bhp and 172Nm of torque. This particular power plant will be seen in the European version of the i20 hatchback in 2015.

The second engine is the 1.4litre T-GDI, which can make 115bhp and 206Nm of torque, with carbon emissions claimed to be just 87g/km. Hyundai says that they dramatically cut the weight down of the engine which now weighs just 87kgs. That is almost 14kgs lighter than the current Gamma engine. A single-scroll turbocharger has been engineered to boost essential characteristics like low-end torque and throttle response. Hyundai says that both these engines are conforming to the stringent Euro 6c emission norms.

The highlight however is the unveiling of the 7-speed dual clutch gearbox, which is a first for Hyundai. This transmission makes use of two dry clutches with a motor-driven actuator for each of them controlling the odd and even gears. This technology results in unceasing acceleration even between gear changes and makes for a more fun driving experience.
