Fiat India has launched the much-awaited Avventura crossover. The car is a stylish compact SUV based on the Punto Evo hatchback. It is available in three trims: Active, Dynamic and Emotion with the range starting from Rs-5.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Emotion variant is exclusive to the diesel model and is not offered on the petrol version.
The exterior is very well designed and doesn’t look like a hatchback overdone with pseudo and tacky looking rugged elements. The whole look is balanced and succeeds in giving it a rugged SUV look. The front end gets swept back Reindeer headlamps, chrome outlined grille and huge enclosures for the fog lamps at the front and stop lamps at the rear. The side gets 16-inch alloy wheels as standard, aluminium roof rails, black cladding on the doors and muscular looking wheel arches. The rear features the spare wheel mechanism (highlight of the car according to me). It seems like it’s mounted on the tailgate but is actually supported by a swivel mechanism attached to the rear bumper. This whole assembly is by far the most stand-out feature of the Avventura. The spare wheel functions separately from the boot lid and proudly displays the Fiat logo as well as the Avventura lettering. Entire lower body of the compact SUV is covered in black plastic cladding, also incorporating the front and rear skid plates finished in Matt Silver.
The interior has been improved as well. Dashboard now gets a dual theme with the top portion finished in black and the lower section done up in grey suede material. The seats get leatherette upholstery but the base and backrest portion is covered in fabric. A new tilt-meter and digital compass can be seen on the top of the dashboard adding to the SUV feel of the vehicle. The door trims get a premium look with the inclusion of brown art leather matching the colour of the seat upholstery. The front seats are comfortable enough but the rear seats have the same legroom as the hatchback making it not very spacious but not very restricted either. Most people should feel comfortable in the rear bench.
Avventura will be powered by both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol unit is 1.4litre FIRE powerhouse pumping out 89bhp with a claimed fuel economy of 14.4kmpl. The oilburner is a 1.3litre Multijet developing 92bhp with Fiat saying it will give 20.5 kilometres to the litre. Both engines will be transferring power through a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Equipment levels are good, top level trim gets ABS with EBD, Blue & Me telephony system with voice recognition, audio player with USB and aux-in compatibility, steering mounted audio controls, automatic climate control and dual front airbags.
Fiat’s compact crossover should pose a strong challenge to its competitors which include the accomplished Ford Ecosport apart from Volkswagen Cross Polo and Toyota Etios Cross.
