Maruti Suzuki has launched the highly anticipated update to its popular Swift hatchback. The car is available in the usual LXi, VXi and ZXi trims for petrol with the novelty of an LXi (O) trim thrown in to the mix. The diesel variant comes in the familiar LDi, VDi and ZDi packages. The new Swift range starts at Rs-4.42 lakh and goes all the way up to 6.95 lakh for the top-spec ZDi (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The exterior has received minor changes to differentiate the old from the new. The designers seemed to have focused most on the face, as almost all the major changes are seen there. You get a reworked grille and a bigger air intake with the more prominent chrome accent seen on the fog lamp assembly. The side profile remains untouched with the exception of new alloy design for the top variant and new wheel caps for the lower models. The posterior offers nothing new in terms of visual appearance. Three new colours can now be opted for – Fire Red, Granite Grey and Mysterious Violet.
Engines are the same but they have been tinkered with to provide better fuel efficiency. The petrol is a 1.2litre unit which has now been detuned by 2.7bhp to provide 83.1bhp. The torque figure however, has increased by a paltry 1Nm to 115Nm. The main news is the increase in fuel efficiency by almost 10 per cent to a claimed 20.4kmpl. The diesel plant is the 1.3litre DDiS unit, which surprisingly, has not witnessed any loss in power but receives a mileage boost of 10 per cent. Maruti says the new Swift now gives an impressive fuel average of 25.2kmpl. This denotes an increase of 2.3kmpl and has been achieved by reducing frictional losses and a modified fuel injection system. Power figures stand at a familiar 72.9bhp and 190Nm of torque.
The interior has been updated as well. There are new fabrics for the seats, push button start and a 60:40 split seat configuration for the rear bench. A new audio system is included with steering mounted controls for entertainment and telephony functions. An automatic climate control will keep you comfortable throughout your journey.
Features which enhance the likeability of Maruti’s new offering are electrically controlled ORVMs, reverse parking sensors, ABS with motor speed regulation and Boost Assist System (BAS).
