Tata launches Bolt hatchback at Rs 4.4 lakh

Tata Motors have launched their much-awaited Bolt hatchback at a lower-than-competition starting price of Rs 4.4 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). This is the second vehicle from Tata under the HorizonNext strategy after the successful Zest compact sedan. Both petrol and diesel variants are on offer and each has four trims – XE, XM, XMS and the top-end XT package.

The Bolt is the successor to the Vista hatch and shares its X1 platform from that car. Looks wise, it looks nothing like the Vista but is more in tune with the Zest. The front resembles the compact sedan, it seems that Tata has gone the way of Hyundai Elite i20 and chose not to endow the Bolt with LED DRLs, opting to go instead with chrome strips and projector headlamps. The side profile gets new alloys and a blackened C-pillar giving the roof a floating effect. The rear looks sporty and well balanced with the roof spoiler, chrome strip on the license plate and handsome-looking flame shaped tail lights.

Interiors are well laid out with good amount of space and a premium feel which seems to be on par with the competition. The base trims get the conventional audio systems while the XT trim gets the Harman Kardon touchscreen infotainment system with voice command. Other features include electrically adjustable wing mirrors, climate control and a multi-function steering wheel. Safety bit is also addressed with the induction of dual airbags, ABS and EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution).

The rear has a fresh and sporty look

There are two engines available and both get married to a 5-speed manual transmission, automatic is not an option at least for now. The petrol engine is the new 1.2-litre turbo unit seen in the Zest. This mill is capable of 89 bhp and 140 Nm of torque. The diesel engine is carried over from the Vista hatch, this means that this powerplant displaces 1300cc and in the process develops 74 bhp and 190 Nm of torque. Claimed fuel efficiency for the petrol is 17.5 kmpl with the diesel returning 22.9 kilometres to the litre.
