India’s vehicle manufacturing juggernaut Maruti Suzuki has passed one more significant milestone in its chequered history. The company has become the first car manufacturer in India to attain the landmark feat of manufacturing 15 million cars.
The car achieving this significance was a Swift DZire VDi bearing chassis number MA3FJEB1S00740865. This car rolled out from the company’s Manesar facility, which also produced the manufacturer’s first car – a Maruti 800 that came off the production line in December 1983. It took all of 31 years and 5 months for Maruti to get to this point.
Dedicating the milestone to the company’s customers, partners and employees, Rajiv Gandhi, Executive Director, Production, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said, “Maruti Suzuki’s journey has been one of Kaizen and continuous improvement. Our people on the shop floor make enormous contribution so that we can offer more and better to our customers, and fulfil their needs and aspirations”.
When asked about the 20 million mark he said, “Of course, we want to get to 20 million in good time, by making quality products with the help of capable and motivated people.”
Maruti says that its medium term goal is to clock sales of 2 million vehicles per annum by 2020. It is expanding its product portfolio, foraying into new segments, strengthening the sales and service network and enhancing capabilities across the value chain to achieve this.
