Maruti Suzuki launches India’s most fuel-efficient car

Maruti Suzuki has launched the Celerio Diesel with prices starting from Rs 4.65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and going up all the way to Rs 5.7 lakh for the top variant. A total of four trims are on offer — LDi, VDi, ZDi, and ZDi (Optional), alongwith six body colours — Sunshine Ray, Cerulean Blue, Silky Silver, Blazing Red, Pearl Arctic White, and Glistening Grey.

Everything looks identical inside and out. The major change is under the bonnet. Here, you will find Suzuki Motor’s first diesel engine – called the DDiS 125 – that has been developed in-house. It’s an all-aluminium block having two cylinders and has a total displacement of 793cc. This turbocharged unit develops 47 bhp of maximum power at 3500 rpm with 125 Nm of torque kicking in at a relatively low 2000 rpm. This low-end pull should make the Celerio Diesel an ideal city runabout with relatively few gear shifts in urban traffic. The most enticing feature though, is the fuel efficiency. The Celerio Diesel has dislodged Maruti’s own Ciaz sedan to become the apogee of fuel efficiency in the country, with an ARAI certified figure of 27.62 kmpl. AMT is not optional as of now, so customers will have to make do with the five-speed manual, the only transmission on offer. The Celerio Diesel is also a very light car with a kerb weight of only 850-900 kgs.

Sharing his thoughts at the launch Kenichi Ayukawa, MD & CEO, MarutiSuzuki, said, “Celerio, powered by DDiS 125 engine, is India’s most fuel efficient car. This is also the first diesel engine designed and developed by Suzuki Motor Corporation. It is designed to offer a smooth drive and strengthens Celerio’s reputation as a car that offers easy drive in cities as well as on highways. With the launch of Celerio Diesel, the three most fuel efficient cars in India are all MarutiSuzuki cars: Celerio (D), DZire (D) and the premium sedan Ciaz (D).”

Maruti’s newest hatchback will compete for market space with the Chevrolet Beat and Hyundai Grand i10.

The prices of the entire range are given below (ex-showroom, Delhi):

Maruti Celerio LDi — Rs 4.65 lakh

Maruti Celerio VDi — Rs 4.95 lakh

Maruti Celerio ZDi — Rs 5.25 lakh

Maruti Celerio ZDi (O) — Rs 5.71 lakh
